From the hills of Verona to a cheeky statue in Milan

After a day of bridges and a stroller in Venice and a night in Illasi, we kept heading west across northern Italy toward Milan.
18 March: Verona to Nova Milanese
In the morning we spent about two hours in San Martino Buon Albergo, just outside Verona. Then it was a long run west on the motorway, a short break on the way, and by early afternoon we were north of Milan. We made a couple of stops around there and settled in for the night in Nova Milanese.

19 March: Milan by bike
We drove into Milan in the morning and were in the city from about a quarter to ten until a quarter to two. Like in Athens, we got the bikes out, for about an hour’s ride through the centre.

Right in front of the Milan Stock Exchange in Piazza degli Affari stands one of the cheekiest things we saw on the whole trip: L.O.V.E., a 2010 artwork by Maurizio Cattelan. It’s a giant white marble hand with every finger curled in except the middle one. The story we heard goes back to Tangentopoli, the Milan bribery scandals of the nineties, when politicians were said to have their hands in everything. Cattelan turned that into one very clear gesture. We stood there laughing and taking photos.

From Milan we pointed the camper south toward the sea. The Cinque Terre and Pisa are the next post.
